German Pinot Noir: Waitrose

JOHANN WOLF: 2022

Just picked this up from Waitrose for £8.79 which I think is a total bargain for this.

The Pfalz region is normally a good producer of Pinot Noir (Spätburgunder) so I had reasonably high expectations for this wine, despite the relatively low price. A check on Vivino showed it had been rated 3.5 (out of 5) so I lowered my expectations accordingly. I needn’t have – this wine is totally charming with everything you would expect from a pinot: raspberries, strawberries, red plums and red apples. Low tannin levels make this a smooth easy-drinking wine although it is 13% abv. Can definitely taste light spicy toasty notes from partial oaking. Could have a bit more body to it, and longer length on the palate, but absolutely great for the price. Thoroughly recommend.
